Thank you for joining this class. You are giving yourself a great gift. Feng Shui is not superstitious. It is not a religion. It is not a cult. It is not magic. It is an art and a science built on the principles in nature. Feng Shui is a complex body of knowledge developed in China over 6,000 years ago which governs balancing the energies of any given space to cultivate health, relationships and good fortune for the people who inhabit it.

Feng Shui is the study of the environment and how you can enhance your life by tapping into the natural and unseen energies present in our world. It is also the study of time and space.

tianshu-liu-242331-unsplash

Photo by Tianshu Liu on Unsplash

You've heard the phrase, "A force of nature..." Well that's what Feng Shui is; The conscious and directed use of natural forces for our human benefit.

The goal of Feng Shui is to create balance and harmony in all areas of your life.

When you accomplish this delicate balance, you are successful in all you do.

Feng Shui is based on the concept of energy.

The Chinese call it Qi. Eastern religions call it PRANA, the Hawaiians call it MANA, the Greeks call it PNEUMA and the Sioux call it WAKAN… and many just call it Life Force.

siim-lukka-281452-unsplash

Photo by Siim Lukka on Unsplash

In Feng Shui you consciously sculpt natural energies to achieve the harmony, balance and positive opportunities you seek.  Energy follows thought and intention.

The art and practice of Feng Shui is governed by a body of invisible principles.

Steven Covey in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, defines Principles as: "... deep, fundamental truths, classic truths, generic common denominators. Principles are tightly interwoven threads running with exactness, consistency, beauty and strength through the fabric of our lives." Principles don't react to anything, they don't depend on the behavior of others or the environment for their validity.  They cannot be destroyed by fire, earthquake or theft. They are bigger than people or circumstances and they triumph for thousands of years time after time.

The first two invisible principles are the definition the two words in Feng Shui:

Wind Over Water.

Feng-Shui

Feng means Wind symbolizing unseen forces, interiors, subconscious, hopes and dreams.

craig-whitehead-260375-unsplash

Shui means Water - the container for, and the physical manifestation of, the invisible thoughts and dreams created from Wind.

Here the visible and the invisible worlds are sistered.

When we change, or direct the Qi of the Wind, the Qi of the water also changes.

Wind and Water work in direct relationship to one another.

Many of you may already be practicing intuitive Feng Shui.

What do you know about Feng Shui already? Take a moment to reflect.

HISTORY:

Let's go back in time to understand how the practice of Feng Shui came into being.

6,000 years ago, in Neolithic China, as villages grew in population they physically outgrew their villages and needed room to expand. They required new locations to build their communities.

Feng Shui masters, the men who meditated, fasted and were consecrated shamans were called to journey out to source new places to live. They were given the task of finding safe and prosperous locations for expanding their tribe.

ujwal-hollica-532506-unsplash

Photo by Ujwal Hollica on Unsplash

The number one concern was the remains of their ancestors which required a mound for higher ground as a place to honor them. In each village, the ancestral remains were always situated in an auspicious place.

pop-zebra-600511-unsplash

The new location was expected to be:

Not too hot; not too cold.

It must have protection from the wind.

It also must be fortified against invaders.

They searched for a classic dragon position where the mountains formed the backbone and the legs of land protected the village which must lead to the sea or lake. This was called the “belly of the dragon” and a safe place to live and prosper.

They required fertile land to grow their food and abundant seas for fishing.

They also needed room to expand as their population grew.

  • They tasted the ground for mineral content.

  • They tested for the wind direction.

  • They dowsed for water.

The shamans took their jobs seriously because if the land failed, crops and people died and they were wrong about the location, they were beheaded.

The growth of civilization depended on their skills and accuracy. So much so that Mao Tse Tung rose to power using these principles.

Mao banned Feng Shui from Mainland China in 1949 because he did not want anyone else using these principles to usurp his power.

Throughout all of China’s history, the Feng Shui Masters were closely guarded and used by aristocrats, emperors and the privileged elite.

We can practice Feng Shui today because it was preserved by practitioners in Taiwan.

Feng Shui is also practiced by Donald Trump, Steve Wynn and the MGM Grand Hotel, which have all been Feng Shuied for success.

The Deepak Chopra Center near San Diego, and the Sydney Harbor Casino and Hotel in Australia have also had the benefit of Feng Shui. As well as every hotel in Hong Kong.

Feng Shui became formalized with the use of the luopan compass in the 7th century CE.

But the principles and practice began much earlier as Form School. That is the type of Feng Shui practice we teach at The Feng Shui Specialists.

Read the Handout: History of Feng Shui Handout # 1

Why do we need Feng Shui today?

What are these powerful principles and how do we use them today?

First of all, there are two orders of life to consider: one is natural law - that which we can see and measure- and spiritual or higher law, that which we cannot see by using the 5 senses alone.

Natural law we see in action all the time, (like a garden when we plant a seed and get a flower) but higher law we only can see the results of how it works.

In the West we compartmentalize, fragmentize, scrutinize and isolate information. We separate the mind from the body and faith from reason.  We take things step by step and we use a logical approach to problem solving.  We like things neat and orderly in the West. We want to break things down and label them.

samuel-zeller-118195-unsplash

We rely on scientific process and mathematical formulary for our information. But that's not our fault.  It started with those Greeks. Blame them.

The Greeks promoted the study of science which presents a rational and orderly view of the cosmos and gave way to the methods of deductive and inductive reasoning.

Sir Isaac Newton’s universe was black and white, devoid of gray. He maintained we are separate from nature and thus able to observe the world objectively. His ideas set the stage for the break between science and religion.

vico-pradipta-639402-unsplash

Immanuel Kant told us that the concepts of time and space cannot be fully understood using sensory perception. There must be a mathematical explanation to everything.

Darwin's theories on natural selection and evolution created the schism between religion and science.  And that's pretty much the sum total of why the West separates mind, body and soul.

However, modern scientists and quantum physics are bringing back the concept of holistic cosmic unity. The universe is viewed as an intricate web of interconnected and interrelated energies and events. Scientists like Bohm, Sheldrake and Newberg are introducing new studies of the underlying principles of unity instead of separation for cosmic matter and events.

The Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio are manifestations of the innate harmony and symmetry of the universe.  We see evidence of them in playing cards, credit cards, pinecones and artichokes.

The Chinese have always believed in the oneness of all things. The practice of Feng Shui was born out of China's reverence for nature. The Chinese believe that they will enjoy a more harmonious life if they emulate the balance of nature's forces in their daily lives.

Feng Shui is the thought process they developed to explain and utilize the truths inherent in nature.

There are 8 Dynamic Truths in Feng Shui. Four Principles and Four Commitments

ryan-loughlin-275646-unsplash

The Four Principles are:

  • Everything is alive.

james-hammond-554215-unsplash

Photo by James Hammond on Unsplash

  • Everything is connected,

clint-adair-68588-unsplash (1)

  • Everything is conscious

  • Everything is always changing.

ross-findon-303091-unsplash

Photo by Ross Findon on Unsplash

The first Principle:

#1) Everything is alive. We know our family, pets and children are alive.  There is also vital life-energy present in each rock, each fork.

john-westrock-736479-unsplash

Photo by John Westrock on Unsplash

  • Quantum physics proves life exists at the molecular and atomic level.

  • Things are also alive with thoughts, feelings, emotions.

  • We react to everything we touch, see, feel, hear, smell with emotion/feeling/thought.

  • Ask: What are things in your house saying to you?

  • Environment is alive with chat. Is it negative or positive?

  • To put Feng Shui into action for our benefit, we must be ruthless with the negative.

  • Any item bearing any trace of guilt, shame or bondage with the past that keeps you suppressed must be excised.

Feng Shui is the architecture of our consciousness and being. We stand as conduit between heaven and earth, between the visible and invisible worlds.

kt-562457-unsplash (1)

The second Principle:

#2: Everything is connected.

We change our speech to the World “Who” , not the World “What.”  We are all molecularly connected with everything on the earth, through energy.

You may have heard of The Butterfly Effect. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane's formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before. It is a principle of the Chaos Theory of modern physics and gives credence to the idea that even the smallest of natural actions can affect the whole of the planet.

"The objects we surround ourselves with are not random.  Your soul is constantly, subconsciously, arranging and rearranging the world around you in remarkable patterns all aimed at integration and wholeness." Denise Linn.

Therefore, we need to constantly check our relationship to our thoughts, things, ideas, emotions and, of course, wing flapping. Everything is connected. The knee bone is connected to the hip bone, the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone etc.....

The Third Principle is:

#3) Everything is conscious.

Consciousness is the basic building block of matter.  The entire universe is conscious. It is the organizing principle of matter.  Consciousness exists before form manifests. A rock has consciousness to be a rock. A cat has the consciousness to be a cat.

pacto-visual-199601-unsplash

You and I have the consciousness to be who we are. Before anything happens in our world, we are conscious.

Have you ever bought a new car and, suddenly, you start noticing all the cars on the road like yours? That's awareness.

Consciousness is that which makes the car a car and a certain type of car like a Mercedes.

The fourth Principle is:

#4) Everything is always constantly changing.  We know it, and many of us we don't like it.

In this class I'm here to beg you to make friends with change.

chris-lawton-154388-unsplash

Change leads us forward. The cycle of birth and death. You wouldn't be here today if you didn't change from that one embryo into a person.

Elizabeth Gilbert said, “One must always be prepared for riotous and endless waves of transformation.”

jeremy-bishop-335002-unsplash

We'll study more about change when we learn about Qi and yin-yang.

Ask yourself: Using my intuitive knowledge of Feng Shui how can I purposely change my environment to match my goals and aspirations?

What is the affirmation I need to bring change into my life for the better? Here is an affirmation you can say if you need to become more comfortable with change.

Affirmation for Change Handout #3

All things are always changing. Change is the most natural thing in the world. My life, through change, is getting better and better every day. I let go and I allow change to be my ally. Change is my best friend and I enthusiastically welcome it into my life.

artem-bali-590526-unsplash

As the certification course continues over the next 5 modules you'll become aware of many unseen, yet powerful principles and invisible forces. To fully grasp the forces, we have to separate our conscious from our subconscious and allow the subconscious a romp in the ethers.

It's interesting to know that logic and reason comprise 12% of our brain's usage while 88% usage is subconscious. Most of what gives form to the world comes from our subconscious, not our conscious mind.

tory-morrison-661230-unsplash

Homework Task #1: go home and look around.  You will see things differently with Feng Shui Eyes. Take a clipboard with you and walk through each room. Make a note of all the things in the room that you LOVE and all of the things in the room that may give you a negative feeling.

kaleidico-754605-unsplash

This task is about feeling your way through each room. Allow the décor and the objects to “speak” to you and then record how your feel emotionally about that piece. You may reach the "OMG I can't believe that I have lived with...."  level, but don't judge yourself or make yourself wrong.  Simply notice it and know that help is on the way.

In this process, it is crucial to not judge yourself or use terminology that makes anything wrong. Whatever it is, it had value at one time and made you feel positive; you and it may have changed through the years and perhaps it is no longer the same treasure it was years ago. That’s okay.  Just notice your feelings and reaction to it. Highlight all of the items you can part with.

When you have made your list room by room, put it aside.  Write a paragraph or two about the experience. Turn this in.

Homework Task #2: Read the handout #2: 20 Ways You Can Benefit from Feng Shui

Answer the statements by stating how you can benefit from Feng Shui in your life for each segment.   Turn this in.

Homework Task #3: Research the Fibonacci Numbers or The Golden Ratio

Write a paragraph on one of them and how they might apply to Feng Shui and the Chinese view of the world.

Homework Task #4:

Read Pages 1-20 in Feng Shui The Easy Way.

Homework Task #5: Scroll back and re-read the section about Affirmation for Change again. (see handout#3)

Write your own affirmation for change and turn it in.

When you have completed your assignments, you will be able to proceed to Module Two.

Looking Ahead:

In our future weeks we will delve into more of the layers of Feng Shui. There are five  more Modules ahead and we will address:

The Nature and Origin of Qi

The Key Principle of Feng Shui - Yin and Yang

The Five Elements & Cycles: Water, Fire, Wood, Metal, Earth.

The BaGua Chart, which is a map of all of the aspects of your life

that you want to bring into congruency and harmony. Career, Knowledge & Self-cultivation Health & Family, Wealth & Prosperity, Fame & Reputation, Love & Marriage,  Creativity & Children, Helpful People & Travel and the Center all based on the eight  trigrams of the I Ching.
